On Friday, September 7 and Saturday, September 8, 2018, the National Institutes of Health and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in association with the National Endowments for the Arts, will host Music and the Mind, Shaping Our Children’s Lives Through Music Engagement. For this second Sound Health event, acclaimed musical artists will join top neuroscientists to explore links between music, rhythm, and brain development.

SAY IT WITH RHYTHM

Dr. Nina Kraus who has published research on Interactive Metronome® is joined by legendary percussionist Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead and tabla master Zakir Hussain, along with Dr. Adam Gazzaley to illustrate the art and science of rhythm. The presentation explores how music can strengthen rhythm skills for language, and how interactive computer interfaces can provide a new avenue for digital music medicine.  It’s probably no surprise, but rhythm and language have been proven to go hand in hand in the world of neuroscience. Rhythm skills underlie normal language development, and rhythmic disorders can be at the heart of language disorders.
