Interactive Metronome: Revolutionizing Timing, Attention, and Balance for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

This research explored the effects of Interactive Metronome (IM) training on timing, attention, bilateral coordination, and balance in adults with intellectual disabilities. The study was conducted on a 26-year-old woman through a single-subject AB design. The procedure involved five baseline phase sessions (A) without intervention and twelve intervention phase sessions (B) with IM training.
Various tools were used to measure the outcomes. Timing was gauged by the task average in IM short form test and attention by SRO% in the same test. The Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, Second Edition, assessed bilateral coordination and balance.
The results were promising across all areas. During the intervention phase, timing improved as the participant took less time to complete tasks, and her attention increased. Additionally, notable enhancements were seen in bilateral coordination and balance. Hence, the study suggested that IM training could positively impact attention, bilateral coordination, and balance in adults with intellectual disabilities.
